Elle McRae Insight from an Insider: I work for a big box retail chain pet store (that shall remain nameless). I have seen some incrediblely callous things that some customers do. Here are some tips to navigate through the big box store and buy products that are new and unused. As far as UVB lighting goes. Never buy a bulb off the shelf. Ever. Be that pain in the ass customer who requests that a manager set aside a new one from a new shipment and call you when it comes in. Heres why: Sketchy customer buys a new expensive UVB bulb, then goes home, places the old worn out bulb into the new box, returns to store a day later and says my wife, husband, mother, etc bought this and its the wrong one. Customer gets his money back, unsuspecting cashier puts the bulb back on the shelf. Now you go in and buy a used bulb unknowingly Any and all reptile decorations you buy should be washed and disinfected before using. Some items are returned and if in mint condition, put back on the shelf. That decoration could be harboring parasites from the last owners animal. Insects: take a look inside the cricket bins. If you see piles of dead crickets, old food and gel and the bins smells to high heaven, skip it! They dont properly care for their feeder insects and some crickets can be ill. You dont wanna be feeding them to your healthy beardie! Most products are safe and brand new. Just pay attention to what you buy and carefully look that item over. If it looks used, dont buy it. Dont be in a rush to get something youve been wanting and buy it anyway. Take the time to shop carefully!
