ELLENVILLE, N.Y. -- After losing out on a casino bid, Ulster County is set to receive a much-needed shot in the arm from the state. This is the best news since the news about the Nevele, said Town of Wawarsing Supervisor Leonard M. Distel Trying to recover from the disappointment of not getting the casino. This is a great way to start off our new effort, our Plan B, said Village of Ellenville Mayor Jeff Kaplan. Plan B is big money: the so-called Ellenville Million, announced by County Executive Mike Hein during Thursdays State of the County. Because a casino will now be sited in neighboring Sullivan County, Hein said Ulster County is set to receive one million dollars from the state, to offset the expected impact. Hein plans to funnel that money straight into Ellenville and Wawarsing. To address economic development challenges that are in that area. Because the Ellenville, Wawarsing area is remarkable with beautiful people and a spectacular place and we want to make sure it thrives as much as the other places in Ulster County, said Hein. Ellenville Mayor Jeff Kaplan and Wawarsing Town Supervisor Leonard Distel have 90 days to pitch a plan to Hein. In the meantime, their main focus is jobs. Im glad Mike Hein sees that theres a problem here with the 18 percent unemployment and this money can be used to...put some people back to work, said Distel. But already, their imaginations are working. The beauty of this area includes a lot of hiking, biking, camping and to get ourselves as a trailhead, said Kaplan. One thing that Id like the committee to look at would be an assisted living complex, which would create some jobs in our area, said Distel. A public comment period the next few weeks will invite other plans for the Ellenvile Million a plan both leaders say will jump start their journey to prosperity. I think Mike Hein has given us hope.
