Ellesmere Port Local and Family History Society - next meeting on Tuesday, 20 May, 2014: Ed Hilditch, Chairman of Burton and Neston History Society, will talk to us about his Grandfather’s diaries: “Ernest Wakefield Remembers”. The talk will be on the first of a series of diaries his well-informed Grandfather wrote. Born mid-Cheshire in the latter part of the 19th Century, he started to write daily entries into his diary from the mid-1890s. Ed’s talk will cover the social and technological history of this time up until 1914 and include fascinating topics like the early developments in road transport (he worked for Fodens as a Pattern Maker), the Titanic and the build-up to the First World War. As usual, the meeting will be held in the Tom Rolt Conference Centre at the National Waterways Museum starting at 7:30 p.m., with the doors open from 7 p.m. Evening entrance to the Museum is via the gate by the canal, past the cafe and shop, turning right at the end and down the slope to the Conference Centre. Membership for the remainder of the year is £10 with visitors being charged £3. I do hope you can come.
