Elliot Mintz posted:buddy holly was born on this day in 1936. he would die 22 years later in a plane crash along with rockers ritchie valens and j.p. richardson also known as the big bopper. they all boarded a 3 passenger charter flight in the midst of a midwest winter snow storm to get to their next show. their tour bus had no heat....and they needed to do their laundry. the pilot had no experience in navigational flying in such conditions. waylon jennings gave up his seat in a coin toss. it will happen that way sometime. holly was a singer, song writer and performer which was almost unheard of in the mid 1950s. he was from lubbock in west texas and attended an early elvis show. he added a native rockabilly sound and established a template for all rock bands to follow....2 guitars, bass and drums. in his very brief career he merged rocakabilly, country, blues, rythm and blues along with rock creating a sound that was both innocent and revolutionary. he proposed to his future wife on their first date. they married two months later. he played with little richard and chuck berry exposing a young white audience to black artists who were not played on american radio or seen on television. he was on the very front line of the rock revolution...and he wore his glasses on stage. the people who credited him as one of their primary early influences included lennon and mc cartney, keith richards, bob dylan and bruce springsteen who said listening to buddy helped keep him honest. wishing buddy holly could be here to celebrate his birthday today....and thankful for what he left behind. elliotmintz/
