Elon Musk on Teslas Auto Pilot and Legal Liability Elon Musk, chief executive officer of Tesla Motors Inc., discusses Teslas auto-pilot feature, autonomous driving, government regulations, and legal liability with Bloombergs Betty Liu. • AutoPilot technology is comparable to airplane autopilot in that it assumes a pilot provides oversight • The onus remains on the “pilot” to make sure that the auto is doing the “right thing” • We are not yet at the stage where you can go to sleep and awake at your destination --- that is autonomous driving • Autopilot makes it easier and more comfortable to drive and adds active safety features: Lane Keeping Automatically Braking Maintain a distance from other autos Avoid highway barriers and other obstacles • Tesla is quite clear that the responsibility remains with the driver • Tesla is not asserting that the auto is able to operate in the absence of driver oversight. • It will be the case in 5 or 6 years when we will be able to achieve true autonomous driving • Circa 2025 is when you might expect to be able to sleep in the car and wake up at the destination • Before fully autonomous driving, we will need redundant systems and millions of miles driven • Probably circa 2027 before regulators approve fully autonomous driving as we will need to ensure that this is much safer than driving with a person https://youtube/watch?v=60-b09XsyqU
