Elsah (or Jersey Landing as it was originally named) is one of Jersey Countys youngest communities. It was laid out in 1853 by James Semple. Lots could be purchased for $1 - if you agreed to build a home with stone from a nearby quarry, in which Semple had a business interest. To provide easier access to the fledgling community, Semple built a road through Askew Hollow, a 600-acre maple sugar plantation that bordered the northern part of the tiny town. The plantation was owned by Colonel Josiah Askew, who fought in the Revolutionary War.
