Elul 1: The TUR writes that the custom of sounding the shofar for the month of Elul is to confuse the satan as to which day is RH! The obvious question should be, why should the satan be any more confused than us, if it is an intelligent being? I believe that one answer could be, that since the whole purpose of the shofar is to bring one to tshuva, what we are really being told is, DO NOT WAIT!! By starting the process of shofar in Elul, we are being motivated to DO TSHUVA! So, it comes out, that the mistake people fall into of thinking that the time process alone, of RH/YK is the REAL mitzvah, can be avioded! TSHUVA is the purpose!
