Elvaston Castles Gothic Hall The photographs below are of two sections of the gold scarlet & black painted panels in the entrance hall of the castle which the 4th Earl of Harrington commissioned Lewis Cottingham to redecorate turning it into a Gothic extravaganza & a symbol of the chivalrous pursuit of love he had for his Countess the former actress Maria Foote The first is of a photograph of a section of the Gothic Hall. The second is of the panel over the door from the Gothic Hall into the passage way leading to the main staircase. It reads Beauty is a witch. This is part of a quote from Shakespeares play Much Ado About Nothing. For beauty is a witch against whose charms faith melteth into blood The third is a wall panel that reads Au Bleu Mou Rant which I have not been able to find a sensible translation for. Perhaps one of our readers can help
