Elvis Presley was born January 8th, 1935 ... he passed away August 16th, 1977, at the age of 42. His professional career spanned the years 1953 - to his death. Our featured clip today comes from an Ed Sullivan Show performance from September 9th, 1956. Our song Love Me Tender was adapted from a civil war ballad, Aura Lee, which was written by George R. Moulton (music), and W. W. Fosdick (lyrics), and published in 1861. Updated lyrics were written in 1956 by Ken Darby, using the pseudonym Vera Matson, (Darbys wife). Elvis appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show came three weeks before the release of the song, a month before the opening of the motion picture which was intended to be titled The Reno Brothers, after the title characters in the film but, was changed to Love Me Tender due to the popularity of the song. On the recording of the song for the movie soundtrack, the movies producer David Weisbart wouldnt allow Elvis to use his regular band of Scotty Moore, Bill Black & D. J. Fontana ... instead the Ken Darby Trio performed the backing.
