A little while after the Tampa incident I went looking for an image of boats as source material, inspired by Graham Wares photographs and various romantic images of ships at sea, and especially after watching ships come and go through Botany Heads. I had a particular vision of the image in my head from news broadcasts of the Tampa in the distance with the tender ferrying people to shore on Christmas Island. And so I searched and eventually found the Wilhelmsen Line website. This is how they presented the Tampa for many years, sailing past Admiralty house, Kirribilli. The Tampa incident was a beat up to get the Queensland Liberal Partys rorting (australianpolitics/news/2001/01-08-25.shtml) of the GST off the front page of the national dailies. Once the Libs had set the mis en scene they knew they had a vote winner for any occasion. And then 9/11 happened. And Homeland Security. And NSA. And TPP. And open for business. Violence (homicide and suicide) increases with conservative governments and decreases with liberal governments. Robust, dose response, causal relationship measured in Aus, UK and US throughout the 20th century. Grubby-business-politics.
