Email------>Kenyatta University Housing Crisis and the further crisis behind it Robert Alai, you are the brave one who can help US sort this out. Please hide my IDENTITY; the KU administration is capable of destroying my life. Walking into KU from 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm, you would be surprised by the droves of students walking out of the school. Although there has always been a persistent and unsolved accommodation problem in the school, never has the crisis occurred this big. This came when the administration ruled out accommodation for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and the 5th years. In the end, in spite of increased enrollment, only a handful of students have received accommodation. This, especially, caught the JAB students offguard as they frantically sought rooms in the almost middle-class neighboring Kahawa Wendani and Kahawa Sukari. Rents in these places are too steep for an average student’s budget as a BEDSITTER currently goes for an average of Ksh. 9, 000. Most recently, students were pleading with greedy Kahawa landlords to let them in unfinished buildings, BUT even those buildings are now all filled. Some students retreated into the nearby Kenyatta Market, an insecure and crime-sodden place whereby students are frequently mugged. Right now, finding a house is difficult in Kahawa, Kenyatta market, and Ruiru. A relative of mine told me he is searching for a house in Roy Sambu and I wondered whether he would meet the rent in a place such as RoySambu. Meanwhile, the administration keeps on establishing new COMPLEX buildings at the expense of students’ plight. For instance, the school is currently building an Alumni Centre, a Sports Centre, and a Graduate School. Recently, the school finished a complex Administration block. More ENRAGING is the fact that the school is building UNI-CITY, a campus version of Tatu City, meaning it is an ALL-IN-ONE shopping mall that will house banks, supermarkets, and other services. You would not fail to notice that there is a concealed COMMERCIAL FILTH going on in the school with no adequate voices to vouch for students’ rights. Some people speculate that the School SENATE has stalled the efforts at building hostels, because they have built their own HOSTELS in the neighboring Kahawa and Ruiru environs for students to rent. The totalitarian system in Kenyatta University has muffled students’ voices and I am unsure whether any student can publicly voice an anti-administration opinion in the school. Recently, the administration made a un-21st century SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY that will further bar students from expressing their concerns. To all concerned VOICES, please let US reach out for students’ plight at Kenyatta University as these students are currently leaving in RISKY areas. Several KU students have lost their lives due to off-campus accommodation and in spite of plea, the administration has not made any move. Regards.
