Email from Miss Ayers ....So proud of my 2nd grader today! Can’t remember if we discussed this at conferences or not, but, I wanted to let you know that I am considering referring Reese for SAGE (the gifted program). She is probably the most insightful kiddo I have ever met! I have been testing her for her new reading level the past two days and she has blown me away with her responses to my questions. She has read through levels T, U, V, and W--and passed them easily. To give you an idea of where she is reading, 5th graders are expected to be on level T at the beginning of the year and W at the end of the year. Today she read a book about a girl who goes to Thailand to help with a tsunami relief, and we had at least a 10 minute in-depth discussion after she read the book. She was telling me all about how the girl changed throughout the book and even pulled in the phrase “you should never judge a book by its cover” and used it to relate to the story. She was making inferences and relating the story to her life. Also, she not only can read the harder vocabulary words, but she can figure out the meaning of the words by thinking about what the story is about. Most 2nd graders that make it to a higher reading level get lost within the vocabulary and lose sight of what the story is about. This doesn’t happen to Reese! I have always been amazed at her academic abilities but these reading tests confirmed my thinking—that she is gifted. This is, of course, just my opinion : ) Being gifted doesn’t necessarily mean being successful with academics, it’s more about the way a child’s brain works. If you are interested, I can put in a testing referral for her. They would ask for your permission for her to be tested, and then she would probably be tested sometime after break. After being tested, they would notify you whether or not she qualified. If she qualifies, it doesn’t mean she HAS to be in SAGE. That would be up to you and Reese. If you have questions or thoughts… please let me know! Sorry this is such a long email & I hope it makes sense! : )
