Emergency Headlines 21.1.15 WEST AFRICA Ebola crisis In Liberia, with the caseload down to 4 new ones in the last 7 days, the country is well and truly in the ‘end game’. There will soon be space to look at longer term recovery, with an emphasis on stimulating the economy out of its frozen state. This could mean short term cash injections and credit as part of a wider stimulus package, and Oxfam is lobbying institutions such as the Government, World Bank, the USA, and other NGOs to take this approach. Longer term work will also involve the social impact the crisis has had in the country, specifically the three issues of trauma, fear and stigma; as one report puts it: ‘In many ways the social wounds are as deep as the medical and economic ones’. In both countries we are continuing with water and sanitation work (creating, pumping, and treating supplies), community mobilisation, and distributions of hygiene items. In Sierra Leone we are also continuing with construction work on community care centres. In Mali we continue to do preventative work in schools. We have so far reached 650,000 people in Sierra Leone, 445,000 in Liberia, and 33,000 in Mali. Oxfam America has reached a further 15,000 with preventative work in Guinea Bissau, Gambia, and Senegal.
