Emergency Headlines 23.7.14 LATIN AMERICA & CARIBBEAN Haiti We have an ongoing programme responding to, and trying to prevent cholera. The disease appears bedded in now, and eradicating it from the country looks very unlikely. We continue to run urban public health and waste management programmes, and to influence the Government and donors to put effort into durable solutions to support the most vulnerable. Colombia Various armed groups take oil illegally from oil pipes that cross the territories they have presence in, collecting it in pools. Recent heavy rains over the last few months have caused these pools to overflow, spilling oil into several rivers in Nariño’s department – the only source of water for around 30,000 people. The municipal government has declared a health emergency. Oxfam is starting an assessment to identify the main needs and start a humanitarian response that guarantees access to safe water for the most vulnerable communities.
