Emergency Kit Cook-Off Launches New .Org Website Featured Ingredients Voting Opens Today PHOENIX—The Emergency Kit Cook-Off has a new logo, a fancy new website, and is putting renewed emphasis on inspiring people to play with preparedness year round. Beginning today, the public can VOTE in an online poll to decide the Featured Ingredients for this year’s Emergency Kit Cook-Off in September. Five “winning” ingredients—one in each of five categories—will be announced on the new EmergencyKitCookOff.org on Wednesday, Sept. 4. In September, the public is challenged to highlight at least one of the Featured Ingredients and use only nonperishable foods in recipe. Participants are encouraged to avoid the microwave and use manual appliances (e.g., can opener and hand whisk) where possible. Recipes submitted to through the Kit Cook-Off website are vetted and then added to an online Kit Cookbook. Visitors can search, print, comment on and rate the recipes of other Kit Cook-Off participants. You may also share a preparedness tip and/or suggest an ingredient for future Featured Ingredient polls at EmergencyKitCookOff.org. The Arizona Division of Emergency Management created the Kit Cook-Off in summer 2011, in part, because of the popularity of cooking competition television—programs like Top Chef and Chopped. The Kit Cook-Off is inspired by the contents of a 72-hr. emergency food kit. Creating a kit with enough nonperishable food and potable water for three days (or 72-hours) is one of the four preparedness tenets (plan, prepare, inquire and inspire). A kit should also include first aid supplies, necessary prescriptions, important paperwork (e.g., personal identification and insurance papers), and a weather radio. September is National Preparedness Month, but emergency preparedness is not a once-month-a-year activity. Being all-hazard prepared requires an abiding commitment to make a PLAN, PREPARE a kit, INQUIRE about school, work and community plans and threats, and INSPIRE others by being a preparedness role model yourself.
