Emma Hayes, the manager of Chelsea Ladies, calls for football to make it much more difficult for a player to commit a serious crimeSo far I have resisted joining the Ched Evans debate but there comes a point where you feel the weight of responsibility as a woman in the game to say something. It is on my conscience.As a football manager, and a human being, I see both sides of the issue – and both have been horribly let down. The way this case has been handled has cost the victim her privacy and Evans his career. He was badly advised to stay silent, when both he and the PFA should have been vocal on condemning violence against women. Evans should have offered to support womens charities, sought counselling, made greater efforts to rehabilitate himself. The initial lack of any remorse or concern for the severity of the crime is what I believe fundamentally upset people and led to his vilification. To my mind that has gone too far now. Evans is a young man and he should be forgiven. As it stands he should be allowed – under the rules – to return to football. Continue reading...
