Emma Thompson Forgives Helena Bonham Carter for Affair With Kenneth Branagh They say time heals all wounds, and thats certainly the case for Emma Thompson. In the 90s, the Oscar winner was part of a British celerity power couple with actor/director Kenneth Branagh. But they divorced in 1995 in large part due to his affair with Helena Bonham Carter, whom Branagh met on the set of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein. Thompson opened up about the affair and the aftermath for the first time to the U.K.s Sunday Times (via Us Weekly), saying that its all blood under the bridge. You cant hold on to anything like that. I just think ... pfft. At the time, Thompson and Branagh said their work demands kept them apart, but the rumors that hed hooked up with Carter were confirmed when they went public with their relationship, which lasted until 1999. Since then, all parties have moved on: Thompson is married to actor/producer Greg Wise; Branagh wed art director Lindsay Brunnock in 2003; and Carter shares two children with director Tim Burton. While Thompson could justifiably still be angry with Carter, she said she forgave the other actress long ago. Its pointless. I havent got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago. In fact, with the distance of time, she now understands why the affair happened in the first place -- because they were alike in being slightly mad and a bit fashion-challenged. The ordeal at least gave her the emotional punch necessary to knock out certain scenes in 2003s Love Actually, when her character learns her husband has been unfaithful. Ive had so much bloody practice at crying in a bedroom, she said, then having to go out and be cheerful, gathering up the pieces of my heart and putting them in a drawer.
