Emmanuel De Merode runs Virunga National Park - home to endangered mountain gorillas, elephants and incredible biodiversity. When he has a chance to visit his home he is our neighbour in Kenya and ElephantVoices wants to support his excellent work. The Virunga Foundation has entered the Google Impact Challenge - For those of you unfamiliar with the Challenge, it is a Google initiative that supports non-profit organizations that use technology to tackle problems and transform lives around the world. Project background: The four million people that live within a day’s walk of Virunga National Park need a tool to help them safely report illegal activities and receive alerts. Such a tool will help them take an active role in establishing long-term peace and stability in the region. It will also help the Virunga park rangers by putting many more ears and eyes on the ground to help protect the mountain gorillas and other wildlife of Virunga National Park. Project Goal: Virunga Foundation seeks to introduce a mobile phone-based system that will give people the ability to instantly report security threats, poaching, and other emergencies. The system will also be used to broadcast emergency notices to the local population. Please take 30 seconds to help the Virunga Foundation win a £500,000 (approximately US $853,327) grant to protect the people, mountain gorillas, and other wildlife of Virunga!
