Emmitt’s story is both heart breaking and inspiring and his journey to find physical and emotional healing has begun. Emmitt was rescued from Moreno shelter in very serious condition, totally emaciated and lame, we were not sure he was going to make it. He spent several days at WCBR’s vet with a pretty grim prognosis however WCBR was not ready to give up on him. Emmitt has been abused. He has a metal bullet lodged in his spinal column, and old injuries of a broken femur and leg. He is unable to control his bladder and bowels, is emaciated and came out of the shelter with kennel cough. We were told that medically there was not much that could be done for Emmitt. After two neurological exams the consensus is a pellet is lodged in his spine from an air gun. We cannot imagine the pain this has caused Emmitt and he has severe nerve pain in his back leg. When tested to see why he holds up his leg his reaction was disproportionate to the pressure applied. This extremely compliant, happy-go- lucky boy who never complains yipped out in pain during the leg & foot test. The neurologist said the pellet is pressing on a nerve (similar to human sciatica nerve pain) and that it will get worse over time if not removed. She is not hopeful that he will regain control of his anus or urethra with the bullet removal but she is hopeful that there might be an improvement in his urinary incontinence because his sphincter still has some control. She is also amazed his other broken leg has healed. She said it may have been splinted but never operated on and stated it would have taken months to heal over to the point it is today. It is hard not to cry when hearing what this extremely sweet and seemingly unaffected 9 month old boy has endured at human hands in his short life. He is a living representation of resilience, forgiveness and love. As for his foster Mommy, she continues to tell him what an angel he is and that help is on the way. Even if the surgery cannot cure his incontinence this sweet boy needs to be free of pain. His foster mom is fully committed to deal with his incontinence and we all know how grateful he is for every bit of love and affection he receives. This surgery is going to be costly but we have almost 13 000 followers and we know we can do this together. Emmitt has a long, happy life ahead of him without pain if we can raise the funds desperately needed to remove the pellet, please will you help us make that happen? - See more at: youcaring/medical-fundraiser/emmitt-s-journey/128645#sthash.BBQ3iFgC.dpuf
