Emotional rape ... when someone is entertained by watching the person that loves them, trying in vain, to save the relationship that he/she truly believes was the best one of her life. An emotional rapist pretends to love you — and does a convincing job of it — in order to gain your love and trust. These are false relationships from the very beginning in which we are targeted, exploited and betrayed. An emotional rapist is a predator who targets a victim with the intent of seriously harming her and using her. An emotional rapist is able to completely hide his true identity and motives as he targets and pursues a victim. He sweeps her off her feet and creates the illusion of a once-in-a-lifetime love. He can easily become exactly what she needs — many victims say they believed their predator was their “soul mate.” This idyllic stage of the relationship is called the idealization stage, and it creates the very strong bond needed to make her vulnerable to his campaign of systematic and purposeful manipulation and abuse during the next stage, known as the devaluation stage. The predator starts to become distant, withdrawing his love, attention and affection…but then showering her with it on occasion, reverting back to his persona as the man who loved her. This intermittent reinforcement creates extreme emotional ups and downs for the victim.
