Emphatic Smith catching up with Gavaskar Bangalore, October 24 The South African batsmen made merry on Day 2 of the second Test against Pakistan in Dubai and it was especially a memorable day for the Proteas skipper Graeme Smith, who achieved several milestones, most of it individual and some in partnership with AB de Villiers, to put the touring side in command. Below are some of the milestones achieved: #Graeme Smith, scored his 27th hundred in Test cricket and also registered his 5th double hundred in the five day format when he hit an unbeaten 227 against Pakistan in the second Test in Dubai. #Graeme Smith joined Michael Clarke and Donald Bradman in the second place on the list of captains with most number of 200s in Tests. Brian Lara heads the chart with five double hundreds as skipper while Smith, Clarke and Bradman have scored 4 each. #Smith is only second to batting greats such as Donald Bradman, Brian Lara and Wally Hammond in terms of overseas double hundreds. Bradman, Lara and Hammond have scored 5 double tons away while Smith has now scored 4. #Smith went past Stephen Fleming as captain with most number of overseas double tons in Tests. The Proteas southpaw has four overseas double hundreds while leading the team. #Smith is currently placed 11th jointly with Rahul Dravid on the list of batsmen with most double hundreds in Tests. Bradman heads the list with 12, followed by Lara with 9. Sangakkara is third with 8, Hammond is fourth with 7 while Atapattu, Sehwag, Miandad, Jayawardene, Ponting and Tendulkar are all jointly placed 5th with 6 double tons. #Smith also went past 9000 Test runs during his knock in the ongoing second Test against Pakistan. He became only the second South African player after Jacques Kallis with 9000 or more runs. #Smith, who reached the milestone of 9000 in his 195th innings, became the 12th player to surpass the 9000 barrier in Test cricket. #During his innings in the second Test, Smith went past Inzamam-ul-Haq, Javed Miandad and Graham Goochs career runs. #When he crossed 150, Smith went past Gary Kirsten and moved up to the second place on the list of South Africans with most number of scores of 150 or more in Tests. Kallis is at the top with 14 while Smith has 9. #During this innings, Smith went past Matthew Hayden to move up to the second place on the list of most runs scored as an opener. As of now, he has scored 8792 runs as an opener and is closing in on Sunil Gavaskar, who amassed 9607 runs from the same position. #Smith, who was unbeaten on 227, registered the highest individual score in Test cricket this year, going past Mahendra Singh Dhonis 224 against Australia in Chennai in February. Smith also went past Shikhar Dhawan (187 against Australia in Mohali in March 2013), to register the highest individual score as an opener this year. #Smith, who registered the fifth individual double hundred of 2013, became the first non-Asian cricketer to have scored 200 or more in an innings this year. #AB de Villiers, who scored an unbeaten 157, registered his 17th century in Test cricket while it was the 8th time that he scored 150 or more in an innings. He joined Kirsten in the third place for South Africans with most number of 150 or more scores. #Smith and de Villiers were involved in an undefeated stand worth 326 runs, the best partnership for the fifth wicket for a South African pair in Test cricket. The previous best was the 267-run stand between Kallis and Prince against West Indies in 2005. #Smith and de Villiers also registered the second best fifth wicket stand against Pakistan in Test cricket. They are just 2 short of going past Justin Langer and Ricky Pontings 327-run partnership in Perth in 1999.
