Empingham utilised home advantage against Barrowby on Sunday to get back to Grantham and District League Division One winning ways after the previous week’s disappointment. After winning the toss at fortress Exton Road, they elected to bat on a beauty of a wicket prepared by groundsman Mal Smith. The home side scored freely from the start with opener Robbie McKevitt going on to make 94 before being caught in the deep. Rick Cooper was also on form again as his quick 73 supported McKevitt whilst allowing the batting team to post a decent score. Additional contributions came from Mark Coburn, Baz Sharp and Jack Milner to see Empingham reach 267 for 7 after their 40 overs. T McCarton was the pick of the visiting bowlers with 3 for 41. In response, Joe Stafford opened with a great spell to take early wickets. The main resistance from Barrowby came from James McCarthy, 79, who was dismissed in unusual circumstances. Having hit the previous delivery straight at the bowler, Cooper, resulting in him being virtually immobilised, the batsmen was bowled the very next ball before Cooper limped off. Of the Empingham bowlers, Stafford returned figures of 3 for 19 from 8 overs and Danny O’Kane was yet again among the wickets with 2-35. Ollie Elson also bowled well, restricting the scoring opportunities for Barrowby. Overall a sound performance and with skipper Tom Cooper returning from holiday next week it will be interesting to see if there’s a place for him in the side! Report by Adam Ireland
