Employment in Japan after Graduation If a foreign student who has obtained a university or specialist degree and graduated from a university, vocational college, etc. finds employment in Japan, s/he must change his status of residence from College Student to one that authorizes him/her to work in Japan. According to the Immigration Bureau, of the 8,586 foreign students who found employment in Japan during 2011, about 70.0% were authorized a change of status of residence to Humanities/International Services, and about 19.5% were authorized a change to Engineer.
