Empowering Older People to Improve Lives A three year long project has been launched for older people of district Shikarpur & Jacobabad, Inception workshop of the project concluded –- Older people are most important aspect of a society; however they face number of financial problems in their later age. In order to support livelihoods of older people so that they can support themselves a project titled “Empowering Older people to improve lives” has been launched. Empowering Older People to Improve Lives is a three year long project and will be delivered in 100 communities in 30 union councils of 6 Taluka(Tehsils) of Shikarpur and Jacobabad districts in Sindh province. Age International in partnership with HelpAge International and Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO) is implementing a project “Empowering Older People to Improve Lives” in two districts of Sindh, Jacobabad and Shikarpur. The project is funded by the Big Lottery Fund. The two project districts, Jacobabad and Shikarpur are situated in the north of the province with an estimated population of 1,622,348 (with 113,564 Older People). 90% of livelihoods in these districts are agro-livestock based with communities sowing two crops a year, the primary staple foods of wheat and rice. Both districts are prone to yearly monsoon and riverine flooding and were amongst the worst affected districts during the floods of 2010, 2011 and 2012 which resulted in significant loss of livestock, crops, houses and other livelihood infrastructure. The project has been launched with an Inception workshop which were organized at Shikarpur from December 02 - 04, 2014. Project staff along with other stakeholder actively participated in this three day long workshop.
