So much is to be said about these hours. The confirmation came on the night of their return, and the succeeding evening we marched on, unaware and unprepared for what was to follow. Our recon unit led the remainder of Concilium to a subtle opening hidden beneath what a native Earthling would recognize as a wall of quartzite. Its highest points superseded twenty-five feet, and its length was nothing short of that either. I had to catch myself in that moment, as a sweet nostalgia passed through me. I recall a glimpse from my past…mountains much larger but similar in structure. This planet never ceases to amaze me, for the similarities to Earth are sometimes startling. Once we reached the mouth of The Underground, an assembly of men received us there. One, who I have now learned to be the leader of this insurrection, came forward. He introduced himself as Bon Praxi, the appointed delegate for The Underground. Only from his voice could I determine his gender, as he clothed himself in black, as well as camouflaging his face with a dark substance. This hid all distinctive characteristics, and rather created a silhouette my eyes were incapable of adjusting to. I believe it safe to assume that this garb is protection from enemy detection; “becoming one with the shade,” he called it. “It is but an honour to be standing before this noble army,” he began after introduction. “I, along with many others, have been sharing the story of those who risked everything for our lineage; the soldiers from our childhood: The Great Concilium.” With those words, Bon Praxi led us into the belly of The Underground. I found myself overwhelmed. Before this moment I had not realized what a mark this army had placed in the hearts of those rescued from the decaying Earth. The gratitude we felt then was as impenetrable as the dense walls surrounding us. As we traveled deeper into isolation, Bon continued his speech. After the raids began on Planet Ignotum, he and his followers held on to their faith, relishing in the hope that Concilium still existed. It was then that they decided to focus their efforts on locating us and ultimately joining forces. “Men and women from far and wide have found refuge here in The Underground. All who seek us out are those who have heard tails of The Army for the Fallen. To some you are merely a myth – to others? You are real-life heroes.” I was astounded to find out that many of the original Concilium-Ark inhabitants survived the raids, and awaited our return. As Bon Praxi spoke, a silence fell upon my men, and I knew that their will was growing as profound as the faith The Underground held for us. I could feel the unrest among us; all could not wait to meet the assemblage of followers. … I regret to say I must suspend myself here for a brief time as Bon Praxi has news in regards to our headquarters. As promised, upload will begin immediately; however, I will continue my narration of the present happenings regarding The Underground as soon as it is possible… Be careful out there. The pulse from the adrenaline, in the millions of hearts aboard this Ark, has turned into a deep bass, giving life to the steel that surrounds us. Soldiers have returned to their adolescent selves for brief moments in celebration and excitement over Xethere’s efficacious piloting expertise. The rest of Concilium’s inhabitants cheer and commemorate life, success, survival, relief. I, myself, find it difficult to refrain from such compulsions, for the liberation of fear has but almost dissipated. In the next several days, an assembly of men will be assigned to leave the Ark in order to survey the premises. I am afraid that Concilium inhabitants will remain on board until the atmosphere and environment have been cleared by our team. A large mass, several hundred yards from where Concilium has touched down, was spotted on our radar as we descended. It lay still, bordering a small piece of land alongside a large body of water. In a few days’ time, soldiers and scientists of Concilium will have enough information and samples gathered in order to make an indication as to the likelihood of inhabitants retiring from the Ark. For now, Planet Ignotum ignites a hope in me. Its landscapes seem vast and comparable to those of Earth; however, the shade has moved in, so visibility of the terrains characteristics is hindered. Anticipation grips me, for educating myself and Concilium about this foreign planet is both frightening and thrilling. Peering out of this metallic mass, listening to the laughs and applause of my men, I exult in this small victory, and allow those around me to feel the ironic sense of normality within their contentment.
