End of an era today. After over 17 years at Marcos pizza, 11.5 - TopicsExpress

End of an era today. After over 17 years at Marcos pizza, 11.5 years on LaGrange, I signed out for probably the last time this afternoon. Ive been down to only 3 days for several weeks, but a mild heart attack a couple weeks ago has hastened the inevitable. Quite simply, my body is no longer capable of performing my responsibilities at a level my employer needs to expect. My heart, weak since birth, is failing, and arthritis has made walking and especially climbing stairs painfully difficult. To their credit, my bosses and owner have stuck by me and tried to make my job as easy as possible, but they deserve better, so the time has come. Im not going to miss the neighborhood, but I will miss my coworkers, many of whom I have been with for a decade or more. They have made coming into work interesting and fun, and despite being a bunch of dumb kids half my age, they are some of the greatest people Ive ever worked with. I plan to take a little time to recover and lose some weight. then re-evaluate my options and remaining abilities to see what I can still physically do. I need to get back to school and this time learn a skill I can translate into employability. College for the sake of a resume point doesnt get you a job, actual skills do. If Im feeling better in the spring the option is still open to go back to pizza, but for now.... When one door closes..... ??
