End of the 26th week of school: This was a busy, unusual week. Dwights colleague who is scheduled to direct the program next year was here getting oriented. In family terms, that meant that the kids had a lot of nights of kids feeding themselves and putting Susannah to bed while Dwight and I were out, so we are glad to be back to normal. We had a good trip Saturday to another pre-romanesque church and a monastery which we had not seen and to some lovely coastal cities, and then on Sunday to Bilbao. We enjoyed a play and dinner with the famous Ana (who helped us get into the school), and another dinner where I got to meet the three university teachers working with our students. They were a lot of fun and we laughed a lot. It is sad to think of leaving these people who I am just getting to know. At school, they celebrated the Encarnacion of Christ with an all-school assembly on Wednesday. Susannah came home Thursday with her face painted like a great big lady bug, and she played games and had a great time all day. Friday the middle and high school kids all dressed up in themes by groups and prepared class dances, which they performed in a competition. I ended up missing all the fun by going into a tunel de terror room where I was trapped watching clips of horror movies that I would never voluntarily watch. Then I couldnt figure out how to get into the auditorium, so I missed seeing my kids dance. I was tired from the late night dinners and went home, but Olivias class won the dance, and kids told me that Isaiah danced well. Sophie was dressed up as a mime, Olivia as a freaky, and Isaiah as a rapper. Olivia and Isaiah played games all afternoon and Sophies class went on a digital scavenger hunt in the city. So, now you know how to celebrate the incarnation of Christ! The kids seem so settled in socially now. Isaiah spent Friday night with two boys from his class playing sports and eating at the centro Asturiano (a type of country club, I think) and going to one of the boys houses. Olivia went bowling with friends on Saturday, and Sophie was out with a friend also. Susannah had a friend spend the night and then was out with her Saturday. And again, it is sad to think of leaving them all. We enjoyed having Dwights students here again on Saturday night. Olivia baked chocolate chip cookies for them all day, and Sophie made guacamole to go with chips. Those are the two flavors I miss most, so I naturally assume everybody else does too. After a week of entertaining everybody else, we were finally able to have ONE family day today. We actually had all four kids and hiked up the mountain, Naranco, that overlooks Oviedo. At the top of the mountain is a big statue of Christ blessing the city, similar to the one in Rio. We had a nice picnic at the top, and are a nice sort of sunburned/tired tonight. Earlier in the week we had a lot of rain and also some hail. It was good to end the week with beautiful sunshine once again.
