Enders Game movie review (NO SPOILERS!) People going to see - TopicsExpress

Enders Game movie review (NO SPOILERS!) People going to see this movie fall into two categories: the ones that have read and love the book, which is required reading at West Point and Quantico, and those whom have not that simply want a good movie experience. Not only do I fall into the first category, but have read it so many times, I have lost count. Heading into the theatre I was filled with a mixture of excitement and dread. I was cautiously optimistic and I had steeled myself for the worst. I had bought the book and read it (again) in anticipation for the movie, because as anyone whos ever read Enders Game and lent it out, it is the most non-returned book Ive ever briefly had in my possession. As the lights dimmed and the movie started, I told myself, Remember the prequels. With that mantra running around in my head, I felt myself let go a little as I settled in for what I hoped would be a good movie experience. I should point out here that I am not a harsh judge of movies. If you can give me two solid hours of good acting, good special effects, and a script that is not intellectually insulting, youve got my seal of approval. And in that respect the movie delivers. The acting was not good, it was phenomenal, the special effects were stunning, and the script did its best to honor the book while not leaving the average movie goer scratching their heads. Were there things left out, changed, or outright contradictory? Of course. Some things just dont translate well onto the big screen. There is a lot of inner dialogue by Ender in the book and they do a good job of making it come across without seeming trite. Yes there were some things I didnt like, it seemed to be a bit stripped down, but this was a necessity as the run time, just under two hours, and the sheer amount of information they had to get across in that time made them have to focus on certain things and condense down others. But there was a lot they did right, the Battle Room and Command School scenes were spectacular. Ben Kingsley, Harrison Ford, Viola Davis, and Asa Butterfield couldnt have been better cast and I felt they really embraced their characters. All in all, I would would recommend this movie to both avid fans of the books, and those who just want to see a good movie. Just one last bit of advice for those of us that see this book as one of the greatest science fiction works of all time; remember that one of the first things you see after the lights go down is Based on a book by Orson Scott Card.
