Energy Express AmeriCorps Members needed! Get your summer started early! Energy Express is a college student’s summer dream: money for living, money for college, responsibilities for building real-world skills, and challenges for adding weight to thin resumes. In 2014 Mineral County had an outstanding group of AmeriCorps members. We hope you will join the team in 2015! Energy Express is seeking students for AmeriCorps* summer mentor and community volunteer coordinator positions. This nationally acclaimed summer reading and nutrition program engages West Virginia’s children in fun reading, writing and art activities. Each AmeriCorps* mentor assures that 8 children are served during the summer. College students should apply TODAY to serve with Energy Express June 11 – July 31. West Virginia University Extension Service provides leadership for the program, which is funded by various federal, state and local partners. Energy Express sites are planned for the Keyser area, Fort Ashby, and throughout West Virginia. Positions will be filled pending final approval of the program. Mentors. After two weeks of training, each mentor spends six weeks working with a small group of children. These volunteers create a safe, enriching environment focused on reading, writing, art, and drama. The mentors also become involved in the community in which they serve by making home visits and completing a community service project. Mentors and children become “like family,” giving youngsters someone who listens to them individually and participating in nutritious, family-style meals. Community Coordinators. Community coordinators commit to eight weeks of service and receive valuable training. Coordinators recruit, train and supervise volunteers to assist Energy Express children in a number of activities. Other duties include raising awareness and involving the community and family members in children’s learning. Each community coordinator will also complete a community service project with other AmeriCorps members. Persons 55 and over can transfer the education award to children, grandchildren or foster children. AmeriCorps* members enjoy Energy Express because they can: -Have a paid summer service opportunity of $1,850. -Earn a Segal AmeriCorps* education award, $1,175. -Build lasting friendships and make contracts in the community. -Learn new skills and build a strong resume. -Eat free breakfast and lunch in a family-style setting. -Serve for just 8 weeks in the summer. -Be part of a national service movement. -Spend quality time with children. -Learn teamwork and build team spirit. -Be unique and have interesting stories to tell. Currently enrolled college students and graduating seniors at least 18 years of age before June 11th, 2015 are encouraged to apply.
