Enfield Council and British Gas agree energy efficiency deal Hundreds of Enfield’s poorest families could see hundreds of pounds wiped off their energy bills as part of a deal signed by Enfield Council and British Gas. It is estimated that residents will save up to 40% of the cost of their central heating, hot water, electricity and gas bills over the course of a year – equivalent to around £400. Six council owned housing blocks – Four in Exeter Road, Ponders End, and two on the Beaconsfield estate in Kettering Road in Enfield Lock, will benefit from energy efficiency measures such as external wall insulation, replacement windows and roof insulation as part of the agreement signed under the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO). British Gas will provide funding for new energy efficiency measures to low income and vulnerable consumers and those living in hard to treat properties via the Energy Company Obligation. The project forms part of the Enfield 2020 vision, a programme which aims to improve Enfield Council services by saving money, creating local jobs, improving our environment, reducing waste and improving public health. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Ahmet Oykener, said: “This is brilliant news for some of Enfield’s poorest residents and shows the Council’s commitment to improving the quality of life of everyone living in this borough. “To have delivered millions of pounds of investment and reduce residents energy bills is superb. In partnership with big business we are reducing energy bills and making Enfields homes warmer. This scheme will help lift many of our poorest households out of fuel poverty at a time when the cost of electricity and gas remains high. We hope this contract acts as a spur to further investment in improving the energy performance of Enfields homes and creating further jobs for Enfields residents. The latest project follows on from a pilot scheme which, saw £3 million invested by the gas and electricity giant to carry out a major energy efficiency programme to 101 flats in Scott House, Edmonton, last year. Steve Gapik of British Gas said: “Our work in Enfield is the latest example of how ECO is making huge strides in supporting communities across the country, and making a real difference to the lives of residents in the area. “Our partnership with Enfield Council will raise awareness of energy efficiency improvements and the measures available to residents. The scheme will bring an economic boost to the area in addition to providing warmer, more comfortable homes - something we are passionate about tackling at British Gas.” The project included the installation of wall and roof insulation, double glazing and replacement of the tower blocks oil powered boiler with more energy efficient gas boilers. These British Gas projects support Enfield Councils Decent Homes Programme, which is undertaken in partnership with the Greater London Authority.
