Enfield Reflects on War History A free exhibition is being launched at the end of this month by Enfield Council’s Library and Museum Service to mark the centenary of the First World War. The exhibition will be officially opened on Thursday 27 March by the Deputy Mayor of Enfield, Cllr Ingrid Cranfield and will feature artefacts, graphics and interactive exhibits about the conflict which raged from 1914 to 1918. At the outbreak of World War One, Enfield was home to the government owned Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield Lock which produced the famous Lee Enfield rifle used by the British Army throughout the conflict. The Museum Service has worked with the Imperial War Museum’s First World War Centenary Partnership and will also be displaying artefacts from several other national institutions – The Royal Armouries, the Science Museum, and the ‘Firepower’ Royal Artillery Museum. They have sourced a soundtrack of music from the era, a drama character – ‘a local journalist who witnessed the shooting down of the Cuffley airship’. There will be dressing up costumes for children and interactive exhibits for all. All activities and exhibitions will be take place between the 28 March 2014 and 11 January 2015 at the Enfield Museum, Ground Floor, Dugdale Centre, Thomas Hardy House. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Youth and Localism, Cllr Bambos Charalambous, said: “This exhibition will look at how this devastating war affected the residents of Enfield – both in the trenches and on the home front. “We should never forget the horror or degradation caused by World War One, both for the soldiers who fought in the trenches and the civilian population, and this exhibition is a way of remembering those who suffered and gave their lives during this conflict, while also noting and acknowledging the contribution and sacrifice the people of Enfield made to the war effort.”
