Engine test -- the Mark One Model Rocket motor. Shell is pvc conduit tubing. The ends are stoppered with epoxy putty from the hardware store -- a bit expensive. Well try plaster of paris in the Mk 2. The fuel mix is more or less 50/50 by weight of powdered potassium nitrate (we used a spice grinder to make it really fine) and powdered sugar, compacted into the tube of the rocket motor. Theres a hole bored down the centre of the fuel... Im not entirely sure why. We didnt have any nice igniters (though were making something for future launches) so we simply stuck a sparkler into the nozzle of the rocket motor, and lit it up. Our goal was to see if our Mark One motor produced any significant thrust. And yes indeed: we had a win!
