England is officially remembering World War I with an awesome installation of 888,246 ceramic poppies spilling out of a window of the Tower Of London and onto the field below, one poppy for each British fatality. The irony of the war remembrance couple with the reputation of the tower is not lost. The dead and the wounded of war of any people is not to be mocked, it is very serious business. But maybe it can be expanded a little. My friend Dick Gaughan, from Leith, Scotland, has written a stupendous song about those times and that meaning, and he’s been singing it every night. In the introduction he often refers to the sadness in the eyes of the old war veterans and how that same sadness can be seen in the eyes of old coal miners. Here it is as filmed by the BBC a few years ago. https://youtube/watch?v=Va9yeTTDg1Y
