England seamer Stuart Broad yesterday said that Kevin Pietersen’s sacking last year was ‘unnecessary’ and that the batsman could have simply been dropped from the team for poor form. He added that the situation could have been handled ‘very differently’, but played down the possibility of a return to international cricket for Pietersen. Meanwhile, Ian Bell opened alongside Moeen Ali for England last night as they continued their preparations for the World Cup with a warm-up game in Canberra.
