England’s national identity to be explored at University Enterprise Lecture As the future of England – its politics, constitution and identity – moves to the centre of political debate, John Denham MP looks at the forces shaping the way we think about England in an Enterprise Lecture at the University of Winchester (9 October). In his lecture Re-imagining England, Mr Denham, Visiting Professor at the University, argues that national identities are created, not discovered. Using the writings of modern influencers, recent academic research and studies by the Institute of Public Policy Research, he defines what it is to be English today and what is in store for the future. He draws on his experience in Parliament as well as recent research and the work of philosopher Roger Scruton and activist Billy Bragg. “The lecture explores how concepts that have arisen regularly in English history, such as the common good, may be relevant to our future identity,” said Mr Denham. “I also want to look at how a better understanding of our history – like a richer appreciation of migration and the presence of ethnic minorities – can assist in understanding today’s English people.” Re-imagining England sets out why a shared national identity is central to the nation’s ability to tackle contemporary political issues. It also considers how the English constitution and state need to evolve to meet future challenges, and how our changing English identity should shape decisions taken in Westminster and beyond. Mr Denham is Labour MP for Southampton Itchen. He served as a local councillor before entering Parliament in 1992. His ministerial posts in the Labour government included Secretary of State for Innovation Universities and Skills, and for Communities and Local Government, he also chaired the Home Affairs Select Committee. Mr Denham was appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of Winchester in 2014. Professor Joy Carter, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Winchester, said: “We are all very much looking forward to this high-profile lecture.” Re-imagining England takes place at 6pm on 9 October at The Stripe, King Alfred Campus, University of Winchester, Sparkford Road, Winchester, Hampshire SO22 4NR. The event is open to members of the public but booking is essential. To find out more and book your place, please visit winchester.ac.uk/enterpriselectures
