English Heritage, which manages Stonehenge, and The National - TopicsExpress

English Heritage, which manages Stonehenge, and The National Trust, which owns the surrounding area, have found common ground in their support of the government plan – first proposed and then scrapped due to the projects cost in 2007 – to have the A303 diverted underground and through a tunnel where the road passes the historic site. A reduction in noise and pollution levels in the area, which sees huge levels of traffic congestion, has long been regarded as essential to the proper conservation and presentation of the site. However, the response to the announcement, made earlier this month, that the project is scheduled to go ahead has not been unequivocal, as The Guardian reports below. The Editorial of our December issue addresses the topic with an examination of the new Visitor Centre (which opened last year), the relationship between access and aesthetics at Stonehenge and the responsibilities of heritage today.
