English-Ladies and Gentlemen English please The nightmare that is April 1 Mistake: I hope I make it through April Fool’s Day morning unscathed. As if being pranked by newspapers, TV shows and your own loved ones isn’t bad enough, grammar pedants also have to put up with apostrophe abuse on April 1. Once you’ve established that this is a day belonging to fools, therefore an apostrophe indicating possession is needed, it’s an obvious one, really. How likely is it that this day belongs to just one fool? Not very? There are many fools – you among them, probably – so the apostrophe needs to come after the ‘s’ to recognize that ‘fool’ is plural. Correction: I hope I make it through April Fools’ Day morning unscathed.
