English Summary & Outlines Title of the Lecture : Self Destructive Behavior (SDB): Toward A Positive Multimodal Therapeutic approach for effective practice in Arabian Cultures. Speakers Name and Title: Abdel-Sattar Ibrahim, Ph.D. Presented To: Dubai, UAE. Date: (June 26-28th, 2007) Self destructive behavior SDB can best be seen as any behavior that implies engagement in behavior, physical or psychological, that is clearly harmful to self. Psychologists are in a unique position to assist individuals and groups in the society who are suffering from SDB. This study is an invitation to psychological health practitioners to become aware of the role of a practicing professional psychologist in dealing with some major psychiatric disorders which are directly or indirectly associated with SDB. I have practiced professional psychology both in USA and in a number of Arabian countries since I have completed my post doctorate training in psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; and Northville Psychiatric Hospital in Northivlle, Michigan many years ago. One of my activities in professional practice, in addition to teaching, research, writing, was in pschotherapy by using a multimodal cognitive behavioral therapeutic approaches . I have since then been dealing with a variety of psychiatric patients diagnosed with depression, personality disorders, and post traumatic disorders who have, in addition to their psychiatric difficulties, been involved in self destructive behaviors. This presentation describes my functioning in this field with special emphasis on my years of practice patients both in Michigan and in some Artabian cultures. My psychological health practices generally has, as in any practice in this field, consisted of assessment and intervention. For both assessment and intervention techniques my model of choice relies heavily on a multimodal cognitive behavior therapy approach with some integration with the concepts of the newly developed principles of positive psychology. More specifically, the main points of this article would be outlined as follows: 1. Defintion of SDB, including its major patterns as reflected in psychiatric difficulties in depression and related mood disorders. 2. A description and review of the importance of integrating cognitive bahavior therapy and positive psychology principles in mental health practice in Arabian countries. 3. What and how Arabian cultural values and differences should be incorporated into treatment strategies? 4. Assessment tools developed by the speaker in practice (e.g., The Arabic positive-thoughts Questionnaire, the Arabic irrational-thoughts Questionnaire ..etc.) 5. Treatment techniques acceptable for use in practice in Arabian cultures, including identifying target behaviors, treatment goals, and selection of the therapeutic techniques. Finally, a discussion describing the needs for psychological and mental health services in Arabian countries will be outlined. (Note: Please note that a more comprehensive and full English copy of this article will be available at the conference site in Dubai on the day of presentation).
