Friday Facts: Denmark and Korea’s History in Sports In the world of women’s handball the games between Korea and Denmark are legendary. So much so that one was made into a movie. Denmark and Koreas handball women have experienced great success within their sports. Korea has won two Olympic gold medals and Denmark has won three. The two teams have met each other in two unforgettable Olympic finals. At the Olympic final in Atlanta 1996 the Danish team were the underdogs against the reigning Olympic champions from Korea. It was a thrillingly close fight. But in the extra time the Danes surprisingly came out victorious. The game that would later be adapted to the big screen was the final at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The tables had turned with the Danes being favourites. The game became even more close, exiting and hair-raising than the one eight years earlier. The teams were neck and neck through the entire game including two sets of extra time, which meant that the game would be decided in a penalty throw competition. The Koreans missed two throws making the Danish team gold champions for the third Olympic Games in a row. In 2008 the movie “Forever the Moment” became a huge hit in Korea, grossing a lot of money at the box office.
