Enjoy this short video of Sandhill Cranes walking on frozen Barries Lake ESPA 57 in North Dumfries Township. Sandhill Cranes return to Barries Lake every year and stroll across the lake to return to their nesting sites. Sandhill Cranes have red foreheads, white cheeks and long dark pointed bills. In flight, their long dark legs trail behind, and their long necks keep straight. They are very skilled soaring birds, able to stay aloft for many hours, requiring only occasional flapping of their wings and consequently expending little energy. Residents are opposed to plans by the City of Cambridge to discharge subdivision stormwater into this rare and fragile habitat.
