Enough is enough! If you didn’t already doubt the legitimacy of the NRA’s idiotic proclamation that “the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun”, maybe the recent tragedies in Seattle and Las Vegas will convince you of just how stupid and dangerous that idea is! In Seattle a student with pepper spray stopped a madman with a gun as he took time to reload, while in Vegas two wackos with guns killed three people, all of which had guns! Two of the three killed were cops eating lunch. They were killed before they could get their guns out of their holsters. The third person killed was one of those “good guys with a gun” that thought he would be the hero by stopping the assault. It was a fatal mistake because, as is common in chaotic situations, he didn’t have all the facts. He was ambushed by the second wacko as he was pursuing the first. He had no way of knowing who was friendly and who might be a foe. He didn’t know there were two bad people with guns! To emphasize the point, these kinds of events are NOT prevented by good people with guns! The presence of guns is NOT a deterrent to a nut with a gun! Rather, these events are happening in spite of the presence of guns. In fact, they are happening with increasing frequency in a direct correlation with the proliferation of semi-automatic guns and high capacity magazines and the explosion of gun rights movements and legislation such as open carry and Stand your ground. It’s only going to get worse unless and until we do something about the proliferation and pathological worship of guns that we see among the extremists in our culture. The tragic irony of all of this - an irony completely missed by gun enthusiasts - is that the nuts that are committing these obscene acts of violence almost always come from the ranks of the very groups that elevate their right to carry a gun over our right to be free from random and capricious acts of senseless violence. Yes, that’s what I mean: the NRA and other gun-loving groups are the breeding ground for the very enemy they irrationally claim they want to protect us from. And in the process of arming themselves against the government, or criminals with guns, or whatever, the country is literally flooded with more and more and more guns, which has the effect of making more and more guns available to those who would do us harm with them. Its a tragic, self-perpetuating cycle. If you dont see it, its because you just dont want to see it. The NRA and their ilk have unleashed a monster and tell us the only way to defend against the monster is to unleash even more monsters.
