Enough of this darn rain (please pardon me California, I know you need it)!!! Tonight is the first performance of the Dayton, Iowa rodeo and about an hour before the performance, the heavens opened up and proceeded to try to drown us. If you want to see the glass half full, well it cooled it off a little. But at seven o’clock the bomb went off and we were rodeoing. To my knowledge, none of the Circle I crew has melted as of yet! In the bareback riding, it was the little man with the big talent from Texas, world champion Will Lowe taking an early lead with 80 points aboard J58 Thrill Ride. His traveling partner, Caine Riddle is second with 76. The steers were a little wicked in the steer wrestling and the bulldoggers were more like mud-skiers. No traction, no stop. The former Okie, now making his home in Wisconsin, Jon Ragatz, was a speedy 5.1 but more often than not, the times were in the twenties. In the team roping it was the pair from Arkansas, Payden Emmett and Chad Harper with a nice 7.2 run. Right on their heels, was the man that knows a little about cranberries and a lot about being a cowboy, Mr. Mel Potter and his partner Iceman Miller (yikes, he sounds scary)with a 7.6. Mel joked before the rodeo they should let them put his rope on in the box before he nods because of his age but I suspect that won’t be happening. In the saddle bronc riding only one man made the whistle tonight (of course that means the rest of them ended up in the mud). Linderman award winner, Kyle Whitker was 78 on N22 Field Mouse. In the tiedown roping, it was once again the tough all-around hand from Arkansas, Payden Emmett with a smooth 10 flat taking the lead followed by Eugene, Missouri’s Jared Kempker with 11 flat. Payden comes by his talent naturally. His dad, Skip Emmett was a tough hand in the tiedown roping, steer wrestling and bareback riding. There were a lot of puddles but the barrel racers went on and made some nice runs. Kellie Hill was a 16.83 followed by Kristine Knauf with 17.13. The bull riding capped off the performance tonight with Jake Weber marking a big 87 points to take the lead over Clayton Savage and Brian Schaefer. Hopefully tomorrow we will have a little less rain and a lot more sunshine. Until then.... Happy Trails! Rodeo Rose
