Enterovirus D68 is making the news. Many people get ill (viremia) and get over it but some get very bad respiratory symptoms. The ones that are most concerning for getting bad respiratory symptoms are asthmatics and the very young. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) last met on 9/9/14 about this issue and the IDPH posted on 9/8/14. The following links are applicable. cdc.gov/non-polio-enterovirus/about/EV-D68.html idph.state.ia.us/IdphNews/Reader.aspx?id=6B8130B2-7FBC-4C12-BF62-6DFE260D00CA I thought the statements were a bit vague on criteria for staying home and consulted IDPH about that issue. Dr. Ann Garveys recommendations were to follow the normal recommendations and specified that, If they have a fever, stay home till fever free for 24 hours. If they are severely ill, stay home till they are better and/or see a physician. If they have cold like symptoms they can go to school. Unfortunately, the incubation period etc... is not well defined and most people will have infected everyone around them before they show symptoms.
