Entitlement reform must start at the top. The rich benefit from the state at the expense of the poor. For most hardworking Americans, contrary to liberal rhetoric, President Obama has presided over an economy of increasing inequality and stagnation. Dont let Republican inaction and reactionary opposition blind you to the reality of Democratic failure to help marginalized people meet their potential for provision. In Obamas economy, entrepreneurial opportunity and social mobility, shared prosperity and income equity, quality of life for the impoverished and for the working class, wages and salaries that keep pace with the cost of living -- all are ideals under assault. But they are not just ideals. They are the misfortune of too many families: the human faces of mechanical and managerial liberal policies. These people need real help. They need real empowerment. The ideals they hope to realize are essential to a free market. But they struggle in Obamas marketplace, because Obamas market is far from free. Obamas economy depends on a government that subsidizes the rich and the corporate class. Obamas economy leaves those most in need with few options other than welfare serfdom. But Americans hurting in Obamas economy -- a withering promise for the many that has benefited only the wealthy -- know that welfare is neither a preferential option for the poor nor anything less than cronyism for the rich. Americans deserve better than a welfare settlement that privileges power, and the needy deserve better than a limbo of permanent disadvantage.
