Entry #8 in my Yesterdays Parade of Long Lost Gino Ruberto Original Songs project is Bucky & Pam. I got the title of this song from inside of a heart spray-painted on the side of GOLDEN LOAF FLOUR air-slide train car while working at the flour mill in Lake City, MN. I was 19 when I wrote it, and this is the song that, to me, legitimized my convictions to uproot myself from Small Town, USA and everyone I loved, and plant myself in the daunting grip of Los Angeles. This video is a LIVE recording from a HOSPICE CARE benefit at Lake City Country Club in 2003. Its my first solo performance after the break-up of my band, Gino Ruberto & Durango. That, plus all the home town jitters. It turned out alright though. Theres a rendezvous at Cap’s place Down on Lakeshore Boulevard And the Sons of Silence are talking violence In black, and looking hard But Buckys leather is in the closet Down the hallway by the stairs He says his fighting days are through And it can stay there for all he cares. They go driving all night in the old mans car With Pam right by his side Talking about the future With a twelve pack for the ride He says, Its tough times, baby, But someday well see the world. And Pam dont mind the tough times Just as long as shes Buckys girl. The soft hum of the street lights Serenades the summer night And in the whisper of a kiss She watches his tail lights go out of sight. You can stay and face the news Or you can turn around and walk And tonight the Caps gangs gonna learn That Bucky aint all talk. Yeah, the boys down at the foundry Well, they laughed him out the door But Bucky just kept on believing So they laughed at him some more He says, Im getting out some day Theres so much more than this. He wants to live forever And Pam just wants a kiss. He said, ”There’s nothing wrong With settling down to raise a family Working on the highway, or down at the factory. That lifes alright for some folks, But it ain’t alright for me Ive just got to break these chains And find out what I can be.” Bucky and Pam are making love by the railroad tracks tonight In the cool wet grass near the old bum’s camp under pale moon light Pams a lover and Buckys a dreamer But together they might come through Cuz Bucky says hes gonna break free some day If Pam dont mind riding on the coat-tails of a dream come true.
