Environment Ministry launches DRM campaign The State Commissioner of Environment and Mineral Resources, Prince Enobong Uwah has said his Ministry was embarking “Disaster Risk Management” campaign to mitigate the negative effects of the impending flood predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET). Uwah, who spoke to newsmen while leading the Green Brigade team to desalt gutters in the Akpan Andem market said, ‘going by NIMET predictions, proactive measures have been put in place to minimise effects of flood in Akwa Ibom. Uwah who warned the people of the danger of dumping refuge on drainages said such action was the major cause of flooding adding; “Please we should stop building on water ways or flood prone areas because during flood, such people will not be able to hold the force of water”. At the Ibom Plaza, Uwah disclosed that the State government has approved the procurement and installation modern television set and other accessories at the plaza to make it a world class a recreational centre instead of a market that some have turned the facility into. Uwah, however noted that his Ministry will continue to ensure that the sidewalks around the area were cleared for trading activities to ensure free flow of traffic, adding that the state government would soon handover the management of the plaza to Jardin Development Company to enable the facility to serve the desired objectives. According to him, “His Excellency, the governor has approved that a new and modern television be brought in and we are still at the process of bringing it in, and I can assure you that very soon that would be done”. Uwah, while commending Marlum Nigeria Limited for completing the underground drainage on Oron Road/Uruan Street project called for timely completion of rehabilitation work on the roads for subsequent opening for public use. Said he “There were worries though, that since the underground drainage has been completed, that the road construction has been deserted. But, the truth is that His Excellency, the governor is desirous of transforming Uyo into a real urban centre, and in his magnanimity has widened the road to two lanes. He appealed to Marlum Nigeria, to fast track the construction so that in no distant time,Akwa Ibom people and visitors alike could drive on asphalt road from Nwaniba Road to Oron Road and vice versa”. The Commissioner who spoke further on the closure of Ewet Offot sand beach in Udo Inwang Street dismissed insinuations that the closure was politically motivated, said it the threat caused by gully erosion in the area had made it imperative for the government to take that decision, with a view to safeguarding lives and properties. He disclosed that the State government has advertised for suitable contractors who would be able to give permanent solution to the disaster area, assuring that Akpabio was concerned with safeguarding occupants and residents of the Ewet community and environs. source: The Radar, vol. 1 no. 2
