Environmental Parks Report – June 2013 Gosho Park The animals are looking well and coming in for supplementary feeding. Of note is the baby kudu that has been spotted. The Peterhouse Boys Woodwork Club have made a prototype owl box and will be making 5 more shortly. All the newly planted trees have been watered well and only a few need to be replaced by the Bush Camp. The tiles have been replaced in the Hikers Hut showers with some various repairs taking place around the camp. Firebreak harrowing has been done all round the park and will be burnt when its drier. The Peterhouse Girls International Award girls are busy painting new road signs to be erected around the park. 800 droppers have been cut for fencing and Piet Nel has started his workers on the fence maintenance. 24 signs have been put up on the perimeter fence warning people that trespassers will be prosecuted. Gordon Wilson has some samples of the T shirts which will be sold for fund raising and is also loking into golf shirts. They are a nice green with the simple Logo on and will say Environmental Education on the back. A brochure is being prepared about the parks in preparation for the ‘Feed An Animal Campaign’ to be launched soon. Calderwood Park The main job this month has been the firebreak – this is now cleared to 3m either side of the fence and ready for burning the ‘back burn ‘ lines and some along the fence at the Western corner. A plan for the boma has been drawn up and we have started sourcing poles that will be treated. The boma will be fenced with Bonnox and black plastic with an estimated cost of $2500. The International Award Conservation Club boys have dug out 2 big areas where Lantana was growing and have done some road maintenance. They have also cleared the area in the vlei near the road crossing where we have set up the tick trough - it’s near the tree line where the wildebeest have been seen so they can easily find the nutrient blocks. The Peterhouse Boys Wood Work Club have made some owl nesting boxes which will be put up in the park. Another mountain bike trail has been set up and a ‘parking’ area has been mown on the vlei near the picnic site. Three more signs are ready and will be erected this week. Penny Raynor Conservation
