Ephesians 4:29 from The Message says, "Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift." The Contemporary English Version says it in a slightly different manner, "Stop all your dirty talk. Say the right thing at the right time and help others by what you say." When I originally read this verse this morning, my first thought was how so many Christians use wrong language concerning God without realizing what they are doing. The next several lines describe how that happens. So many have no idea what they are saying. I have actually consulted several dictionaries to corroborate what I am about to say. Many of these phrases are used freely without thought about what they stand for. Gosh, Golly are both slang versions of God. Darn, dang is slang for damn. What happens when you combine this with the previous slang word? Geez, Jeez are both slang versions of Jesus. J.C. is slang for Jesus Christ. I have often heard these words used on Christian education campuses and in churches. I believe we need to know what we are saying, why we are saying the things we say and we need to understand their meaning. So, if you have been saying some of those things without knowing what you are doing, now you know. Exodus 20:7 says, "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain." Wow, what an accusation!
