Epiphytic orchids What is an epiphyte? Sometimes called an “air plant”, an epiphyte grows on another plant (not in the soil) and gets its moisture and nutrients from the air and rain around it. There are many known epiphytic plants, but some of the most beautiful are the orchids. Epiphytic orchids have aerial roots that can grown up to several meters in length that help them attach to other plants as well as to absorb humidity. Their nutrients come from animal droppings and organic detritus that finds its way onto the orchids surfaces.
