Episcospeak of the Week: Aspergillum (AS.per.JILL.um) Tube with holes at one end and a handle at the other that is used to sprinkle holy water on the altar and congregation, an act called the asperges that signifies baptismal renewal. Can also be a sprig of greenery dipped into a bowl of holy water and then flicked at the crowd, sprinkling everyone nearby. This is a high church but quite lovely ritual seldom practiced at St. Thomas, and is not to be confused with asparagus, which is sold at Bailey Cove Farmers Market on select summer Saturdays. Did you know what aspergillum was before reading this? Has a priest or bishop ever flicked holy water on you? How did it feel? And do you like asparagus? Whats your favorite way to fix it?
